SEA-Teacher Project #7: Mengrai Maharajwitthayakhom School's Teaching System.

Teaching Assistant and Mengrai's Teaching System

At the second week, the schedule was to becoming a teacher's assistant before start to make my own lesson plan to applied in classat the 3rd week. Kru Naa (my mentor) told me to become the assistant of Kru Bee. Kru Bee is teaching Mathayom 1, from 1/1 to 1/6/. Teacher B teach 15 times a week, means that i will be in class 45 hours, at the assisting weeks, i only teach when Kru Bee ask me to teach. Sometimes, after she explained the consept-i will explain the example. Other time she ask me to explain the consept, and she will take the example explanation to make sure that the student keeps understand when i teach. The student can't speak english well, sooo i need to explain slowly. Day-by-day passed i started to be able to speak in Thai language for some mathematics Thai world.

Some of the Teaching Assistant Picture.

Besides the communication problem, at the very first meeting, i confuse about how to use the application that Kru Bee and other Teacher use. Its quite hard since i get used to write in a piece of paper or directly in a board-so, here's the first time i give an explanation using their technology (pardon my bad handwriting, i still learn to get used to it). At first also, the student look really want to laugh at the way i write (maybe because its too big), and the way i speak (maybe i sounds weird) but they keep on polite and understand that i also not get used to use it and don't know how to speak Thai. Besides practicing in class, while becoming a teacher assistant i also learn about how they prepare everything in class.

Mengrai's Teaching system
In this school use five day schools, means that the active activity in the school start from Monday until Friday. With eight periods each day and each period has 50 minutes. The period begin at 8.30 but the students should come to the school at 8.00 to join the ceremony. There are two stage schools in this school, they are secondary school (mathayom 1-3) and high school (mathayom 4-6). For the subjects they have obligatory subjects that come from OBEC and selective subject that come from school. The obligatory subjects are Math, Science, Social, English, and Thai. And the selective subjects are Chinese, Japanese, Physically Education, Art, and English. The students should choose which based on their interest.
There are three departments in this school, namely, Math and Science department, Social department and Foreign Language department. Each department has its own leader. For English department, it has MrsRungnapaYanarangsee as the leader and she is my coordinator in this school.

Materials and other learning sources
The material and learning sources comes from the teacher and sometimes it take in the book that given by the government or the internet. the sources based on the need of the subject. When delivering the lesson, the teacher use media to make it easier such as audio, video, pictures, and many more. Those are supported by the school because this school providesgreat facilities to make learning process runs well.

Measurement and evaluation system
Classroom assessment
Measurement and evaluation are part of the learning process. Teachers regularly and continuously measure and evaluate students’ performance in teaching-learning activities by using diverse assessment techniques, e.g., asking questions, observing, examining homework, assessing projects, tasks/assignments and portfolios, and using written tests, etc. Teachers will conduct evaluations themselves or provide learners with opportunities for self-evaluation, peer-to-peer evaluation, and evaluation by parents. Learners who do not succeed in meeting the standards prescribed in the indicators will need remedial measures for teaching and learning. Classroom assessment s aimed at verifying whether and to what extent learners have achieved development and progress in learning through the provided teaching-learning activities, and determining what must be improved and which areas must be strengthened. Furthermore, evaluation also provides teachers with necessary data for improving their own performance, which must be in accord with the established learning standards and indicators.

School assessment
This evaluation is conducted by the educational institution in order to appraise the learners’ achievements on an annual/semester basis, based on assessment of reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics, and learner development activities. The aim is also to obtain relevant information about whether education provided by the educational institution has enabled learners to reach their goals of learning, and what are the learners’ strengths. The learning outcomes can also be compared with national assessment criteria. School assessment will provide data and information for improving policy, curriculum, projects and teaching-learning methodology. Evaluation outcomes are also useful for preparation of each educational institution’s educational quality development plan in accord with the educational quality assurance guidelines, as well as reports on each educational institution’s achievement to its school board, the office of the educational service area, OBEC, parents and the community.
Criteria for Learning Assessment
In judging the learning outcomes of various subject areas, reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics and learner development activities, the teachers must base their judgement on development of individual learners. Teachers are required to regularly and continuously collect the learners’ data in all respects for each semester, as well as provide remedial measures, enabling learners to develop to their highest potentiality.
Secondary education level
(1) Teachers will judge the learning outcomes of all courses. Learners must have an attendance record of not less than 80% of the total learning time required for the respective courses for each semester;(2) Learners must be assessed on all indicators and must pass all the criteria prescribed by the educational institutions;
(3) Learners must be judged on the learning outcomes of each course; and
(4) Learners must be evaluated and must pass all the criteria prescribed by the educational institutions regarding reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics and learner development activities.
Curriculum
(1) Co-Curriculum. This curriculum comes from OBEC to the whole number of schools, so this is common curriculum that use in the school in Thailand. This curriculum wants schools to give five subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Social, English and Thai Language. Not only the subjects that arranged by OBEC but also the system of scoring and the material that use. Those things come from OBEC as the representative of the government.Every school should follow this rule.
(2) School Curriculum. This curriculum made by the school. It also common in Thai school because the school should add some subject that not relate to the OBEC curriculum. The subjects are Japanese language, Chinese language, English language, Art, Physical and others. The students should choose what subject that they like. Students should choose some subjects as their selected subject. So they are free to choose what subject that they like.

Pedagogical Content
A.       Teaching methods.
In this school use student centered approach because the teacher create some activity that make the students active in the class such as games, warming before the lesson began. The warming given by clue so they guess and trying to speak English. Then when doing task, the teacher ask the students to make group to do the task. It makes the students work in a team and try to help each other.

B.       Learning materials and innovation
Book is the common material that use by the teacher. When teaching, the teacher makes some innovations such as creating power point slide to make students understand about the material and the teacher also create game to make the students enjoy the material. Before starting the lesson, the teacher let the students to think about what they will learn and it makes students think critically. beside that, the teacher also make students more active in the class.

C.       Sources of learning and technology
Teacher use technology to develop the learning process such as giving pictures take from the internet, adding video that take from youtube and they also use projector to support the learning process. In English department room 311 also have electric board that connected to the projector. It helps a lot when correcting students sheet. Then in each class has television to make it easy when delivering the material. this school use a good technology to support learning process.

D.       Authentic assessment
There are lot of way to get score in this school. the teacher use task to get daily score, daily test and middle test to get formative assessment and final test in the last semester to get summative assessment.
